Preventing Aspirin-Related Ulcers
By Tom Dickey
Health Insider: Cholesterol  July 16, 2009

A daily regimen of low-dose aspirin is recommended to some people to reduce their risk of a heart attack. But regular aspirin use can cause bleeding and other side effects, including ulcers.

Now, British researchers have found that aspirin-related ulcers can be prevented with the acid-blocking drug famotidine (Pepcid). Among people taking 75 to 325 mg of aspirin a day, only 3 percent of those also taking famotidine had stomach ulcers, compared with 15 percent taking a placebo. The drug was even better at preventing intestinal ulcers. Get the full coverage on preventing aspirin-related ulcers (exit site, HealthDay).
