Last year a widely-publicized study suggested that people with elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP)—a marker of inflammation associated with heart disease—could reduce their heart attack risk by taking a statin, which lowers CRP as well as cholesterol.
But a new study involving more than 100,000 people casts doubt on this theory. Researchers found that people who genetically produce more CRP than average do not appear to have an increased risk of heart disease. Read more about CRP levels and heart disease risk (exit site, New York Times).
