Type 1 Vaccine?

There's a lot of buzz this week about the latest experiments with a vaccine for patients newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The vaccine is designed to short circuit the autoimmune malfunction that causes insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas to die. How close is this to becoming a reality?
