It's all over the news: Could glargine--a type of synthetic insulin marketed as Lantus--cause cancer?
But wait. The real story is far less upsetting. Diabetologia just published multiple studies suggesting a link, but according to the authors, no definitive conclusions can be drawn from the results.
Some data have even connected glargine to a decreased risk of cancer, so leading diabetes authorities are saying the current studies should not make anyone change their insulin regimen.
Read the American Diabetes Association's statement on the issue. To sort the facts from the hype, read “Mixed Message on Insulin Glargine Cancer Risk” (exit site, MedPage Today).
