Are You Fit and Fat?
By Kalia Doner
Diabetes Focus  Fall 2009

You may be overweight, but you work out regularly. Are you fit or unfit? Researchers looked at 70,000 people and found that over the course of the study, those who were “moderately fit” had half the death rate of those who were unfit. Those in the most-fit category (the top 20 percent) had a death rate of one-quarter that of the bottom 20 percent. So how can you get out of the unfit group and increase longevity? A total of thirty minutes of moderate-intensity activity five days a week will do it. Walking, yard work or playing with kids can make you moderately fit. And an overweight person who’s moderately fit has no greater risk of imminent death than a “healthy-weight” person.
