In
recent
years, a growing body of evidence suggests that coffee is not as
harmful as once thought. In fact, it may even be a healthy beverage
choice, perhaps offering some protection against diabetes (as well as
other diseases, such as liver cancer, cirrhosis, and Parkinson's
disease).
Why the switch from health villain to health protector? Older studies
didn't account for the fact that most coffee-drinking participants were
also smokers. Newer studies--20 worldwide so far--now show that coffee (regular and decaf) lowers the risk for type 2 diabetes (exit site, Los Angeles Times).
