High
levels of triglycerides--harmful fats in the blood that are an
established cardiovascular disease risk factor--are a clear predictor
of
which people with diabetes are more likely to develop the serious
complication of neuropathy (nerve damage), according to a new study in
the journal Diabetes.
Data from 427 diabetes patients with neuropathy revealed that if a
patient had elevated triglycerides, he or she was significantly more
likely to experience worsening neuropathy within one year. Other
factors, such as
higher levels of other fats in the blood or high blood glucose, were
not as accurate at predicting nerve damage.
Triglycerides are measured as part of routine blood testing, so they
can serve as a readily available flag for intervention.
You can reduce your triglyceride levels in the same way you can control
your cholesterol: exercising regularly and avoiding harmful fats in
your diet. Read more about triglycerides and nerve loss (exit site, Medical News Today).
